Tdap Information

Get a Jump on the 7th Grade Tdap Requirement. Many pediatricians routinely give the Tdap booster shot during the preteen years. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control recommends children get the vaccination at 11 or 12, and California law requires they have it to start 7th grade. The Tdap protects against whooping cough, also known as pertussis. Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial illness that causes severe coughing attacks that can sideline a child for months.

A Tdap booster shot given on or after the seventh birthday meets the school requirement but the CDC says Tdaps given at 11 or 12 will better protect a child through his or her teen years. Many children get the shot around fourth or fifth grade. Give proof of the Tdap booster to the school office manager if your elementary school student has had the shot. The MUSD Health Services staff will record the information and you will be able to check that task off your to-do list. You can send the shot record directly to the Health Services Office by faxing it to 925-313-0753 or mailing it to shotrecords@martinez.k12.ca.us.

Students will not be allowed to start their 7th grade classes until they provide proof of having the booster shot.

Children with MediCal, without health insurance or with health insurance that does not cover vaccinations can get low-cost vaccinations at the county Public Health Immunization Clinics.
