Second Grade
Second graders are reading a variety of genres such as fantasy stories, non-fiction, poetry, fairy and folk tales, fables, and fictional, realistic stories.
The students are extending their knowledge of the written word to perfect Type A Paragraphs (five sentence paragraphs with a topic sentence, three detail sentences and a closing sentence), stories with a beginning, middle, and end, as well as, writing a friendly letter with a date, greeting, body, and closure.
In Math, the teachers are constantly reviewing the math sums to 20, encouraging the students to memorize both their addition and subtraction facts. They are also counting money, reading the clock and looking at a variety of ways to solve problems.
Science units being taught this year include plant and animal life cycles, physical science, rocks and soil, as well as making healthy food choices (the food pyramid).
Our Social Studies revolves around the six units in our Houghton Mifflin text book: People and Places; Places Near and Far; World of Work; People at Work; America’s Past, America’s Government. In the spring we participate in the PTA fundraiser by holding a Map-a-Thon.
